LINC: Community Health Worker

LINC is a community-based organisation in Cork city, which has as its stated overall aim to:

Improve the quality of life, health and well-being of all women who identify as lesbian or bisexual in Ireland.



  • To build a safe, accessible and vibrant community centre (actual and virtual) for lesbians, bisexual and transsexual (LBT) women.
  • To provide information and support for LBT women and their families.
  • To promote the mental, physical, emotional and sexual health of LBT women.
  • To inform and contribute to relevant policy development at local, regional and national level.
  • To be a model of best practice rooted in feminist, social justice and community development principles.

Since 1999, LINC has developed to become an organisation rooted in community development practice and principles which provides support and resource services to L&B (lesbian and bisexual) women and their families in Cork city and county and to L&B women in other parts of the country who do not have access to direct services. LINC engages at policy and decision-making levels to improve statutory and voluntary services for women in the lesbian and bisexual community by actively addressing inequality, discrimination and social exclusion.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract on a 20 hour per week basis.

The post is funded through HSE South.


The successful candidate will have:


  • An understanding of, and affinity with, the issues facing lesbian and bisexual women and their families and an awareness of the lesbian and bisexual women’s community.
  • At least 3 years’ experience of working in a community development capacity and a recognised and relevant 3rd third level qualification relevant to the job description for this position e.g. Community Work/Community Development/Community Health/Youth and Community Work/Health Promotion
  • Working knowledge of and commitment to the underlying principles of voluntary/community sector working with marginalised groups.
  • Organising and facilitating meetings, negotiating, and working with others to address issues and challenges identified.
  • Programme implementation.
  • Producing reports and evaluations when necessary.
  • Working with voluntary and statutory agencies.
  • Clear understanding of policy, practice and organisational development.
  • A good working knowledge and experience of community development and involvement strategies
  • A working knowledge of the Social Determinants of Health
  • Knowledge and experience of facilitation, training and organisational development in the community and voluntary sector
  • Programme planning and review/evaluation
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of developing and working in a variety of partnerships and networks
  • Flexibility and commitment to community development work practices
  • Good computer literacy
  • Commitment to social inclusion principles and practice
  • Fluency in English
  • A demonstrated record of involvement  in local communities
  • Ability to work on own initiative and an excellent team player
  • Current driving licence, own car insurance and access to private transport
  • Knowledge of policy development and local implementation
